Knowledge is power - Next - http://www.theage.com.au/technology/: "In June, after 15 months of testing, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission launched Scamseek, a $2.2 million web spider that trawls the internet looking for scams.

Scamseek is typical of an evolving generation of 'business intelligence' or predictive information systems that grind through massive quantities of data very quickly, making matches according to pre-defined business rules. They improve efficiency, reduce costs and lead to better customer service and better cash returns.

In ASIC's case, that meant freeing investigators from trudging through mountains of paperwork so they could concentrate on following tips that lead to prosecutions. Such was Scamseek's power, it claimed its first scalps even before it was officially launched.
